Government Information Resources: U.S. Court System

This guide will introduce you to a wealth of government information resources and services.

Federal Judiciary

The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest court of the land, the upper most level of the Federal Judiciary System.

Level One: U.S District Court  (has jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases)

Level Two: U.S. Circuit of Appeals (resides over cases where one or both of the parties involved are not satisfied with the ruling from the U.S District Court)

Level Three: U.S. Supreme Court (as the highest and most powerful court, hears cases involving federal law. Has the power to decide if there has been a violation of the constitution against a party or parties)
